How Will You Respond to the Results of the Election?

We are just 8 days away from the election, and while I am urgently praying for a Trump victory, it remains uncertain who will win. In the best-case scenario, Republicans win the presidency, keep control of the US House, and take control of the US Senate. The worst case, of course, is Democrats achieving the same trifecta. Then there is everything in between. With that in mind, believers must approach election day with a clear-eyed ability to accurately assess and rationally respond to whatever occurs, understanding that approximately 50% of the nation will not be happy with the result.

Over the last few weeks, my attention has been drawn to Isaiah 6:1, “In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.” The Scripture tells us that Uzziah took the throne at the age of 16 and “did that which was right in the sight of the Lord.” Furthermore, 2 Chronicles 26:5 reads, “And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper.” But at some point, “when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction.” Then, he made the grave error of going into the temple and burning incense, which only the priest was to do. God judged him with leprosy until the day that he died.

King Uzziah reigned over Israel for 52 years. It is estimated that the first 10 years of Isaiah’s ministry overlapped with the last 10 years of Uzziah’s reign. That means that Uzziah had likely been king during Isaiah’s entire life. If so, then Isaiah had witnessed the rise and fall of Uzziah. When the king died, it was undoubtedly a time of great apprehension in Judah, certainly for the people and likely for Isaiah. What would happen next? What direction would the nation go? It was at that moment of national instability that Isaiah saw the Lord, high and lifted up! God was still on His throne! He was still in control! He still had a plan! He was still seeking someone who He could send. Someone who would go and tell the people the message from on High!

At this time of our own national instability, I encourage every believer to vote for the candidates closest to a biblical worldview and then seek the God of Heaven. He is still on His throne. He still is in control. He still has a plan. And He is still seeking those He can send with His message and use to do His work! That is true even if the Republicans make a clean sweep. I often say when addressing people regarding their state legislatures, “If you ever are so fortunate as to get full Republican control of your statehouse, then your problem will be the Republicans.” The same is even more true for Washington, D.C. It is not just Republicans that we need at this moment in our nation’s history; it is Republicans with a strong, biblical worldview and the courage to legislate accordingly! It is also true if the Democrats prevail, though I pray God forbids it. In that event, with unborn life, biblical morality, religious liberty, and the very foundations of our nation under attack from Marxist, secular humanists in ways we have never previously experienced, we will need to appeal to the God of Heaven for His mercy, divine intervention, and the courage to be salt and light more than ever.

Regardless of the election’s outcome, this is not the time to faint. It is not the time to hide. It is time to see the Lord sitting upon His throne, repent of our sins, and seek His calling to courageously do His work in this world in the power of His Holy Spirit.

Encourage yourself in the Lord!
